Back in 1987, Andrew Deutscher snapped this photo of Lake Weeroona Bendigo Victoria using infrared film. With infrared photography, the film or image sensors are designed to pick up near-infrared light (rather than far-infrared used in thermal imaging). This is achieved by using a filter that blocks visible light while allowing IR light to pass through. By pairing this filter with an infrared-sensitive film or sensor, unique “in-camera effects” can be achieved. These effects include the Wood Effect, which is characterized by surreal colors created by vegetation reflecting IR light in a way that is similar to snow reflecting visible light.
