Hibiscus, a member of the mallow family, boasts a vast selection of several hundred species native to warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions worldwide. The plant is acknowledged for its show-stopping flowers, commonly known as hibiscus or rose mallow, with other names including rose of sharon and tropical hibiscus. Hibiscus species comprise herbaceous plants, woody shrubs, and small trees blooming in diverse colors ranging from white, pink, red, blue, orange, peach, yellow to purple and measure between 4 to 18 cm across.

While several species are prized as ornamental plants, Hibiscus syriacus and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis are extensively cultivated for that purpose. The plant’s tea, enjoyed both hot and cold, is consumed globally and reputed for its red color, vitamin C content, and tartness. Its leaves are alternate, rounded, or elongated, usually with toothed or lobed margins, and its fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule containing multiple seeds released when it splits open at maturity in colors of red and white. Hibiscus mutabilis and Hibiscus tiliaceus showcase color-changing flowers with age, adding to their appeal.
