This large historic working farm in the Western District of Victoria was originally established in 1841 as a 66,493-acre property by squatters Thompson and Stevens. The current 3500-acre property, owned by the Fraser family since 1965, boasts a massive bluestone mansion built in 1905 in a mishmash of styles including Gothic, Palladian, Federation and high Victorian elements after the original 1865 mid-Victorian bluestone home was demolished due to damage caused by continued raising damp. The property’s name is believed to come from an Aboriginal term meaning trees by water. Jeremiah Ware and his brothers from Tasmania purchased the property in 1856 and established their sheep run, which at its peak ran 60,000 sheep that took the shearing team in the 20-stand shed months to get through the annual clip.
